What is the program?

The impact of trauma lives in the body, mind and spirit long after it has occurred. As spiritual directors, we’re often invited into the tender, unguarded spaces where that truth surfaces. This training is an invitation to deepen our capacity to sit with embodied traumatic memory when it stirs. Together we’ll explore the impression trauma leaves on the nervous system as well as the soul, and how a grounded and attuned presence can become a container sturdy enough to hold what is unfolding. Through contemplative practice, somatic awareness, and small-group story engagement, we will journey to the edges where spiritual direction meets trauma — noticing where Sacred Mystery opens doorways to healing. We will venture into our own stories in a facilitated, confidential circle as much as we enter one another’s, because the space we offer others is only as steady as the ground we've tended within ourselves.

Vanessa Sadler (she/her) is a mixed woman of African American, Native American, Northern Irish and English descent, and honors the wisdom available in each of these ancestral streams. Her spirituality pulls from Celtic Christianity, Indigenous practices, as well as contemplative mysticism. As a certified trauma-informed spiritual director and integrative story work practitioner she approaches companioning with the understanding that our styles of relating with the Sacred, with ourselves and with one another weren’t formed in a vacuum. She believes our formative experiences profoundly shape who we are today — personally, collectively and intergenerationally — and are worth exploring with curiosity, kindness and intention. In addition to her private practice, Vanessa is a principal training instructor and advisor in Narrative Focused Trauma Care® at the Allender Center, where she navigates complex waters at the intersections of spiritual abuse, sexual abuse and racial trauma.
