Who is Hildegard of Bingen?
Hildegard of Bingen’s 12th century life was marked by prolific writings and music compositions reflecting her mystic visions. Known as the “Sybil of the Rhine”, Hildegard founded monasteries in Germany, wrote chants and composed music, was a spiritual leader and advisor to popes and nobility.
Her mystic visions were recorded and illustrated reflecting her cosmic view of God and creation. In her lifetime she published two volumes of visions: Scivias, or Know the Ways and Liber Vitae Meritorum, Book of Life’s Merits. These included a vast number of visions, liturgical songs and chants, and what some consider to be the first opera - Ordo Virtutum, Order of the Virtues.
Her stewardship of creation, the body, and her knowledge of the life giving medicinal properties of herbs and foods, were recorded in her renown treatise - ‘Physica: Liber Simplicis Medicina’. A 12th century naturopathic physician, she was truly a woman of and ahead of her times.
Hildegard died on September 17, 1179 at 81 years of age.
For centuries Hildegard was considered a saint by popular acclaim, but was only canonized on May 12, 2010, and declared a “Doctor of the Church” by Pope Benedict XVI. Her Feast Day is September 17, the date of her death.
