Kayla describes the origin of this poem and video:
“In 2002 I was in a Master’s Program at Naropa Oakland where we read the book “The Universe Story” by Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry. This is the scientific findings of how our universe was formed, arranged in story format. I realized that the story of the birth of our universe was the only creation myth that didn’t lose its power for me when I took it literally, and also it was a creation story that multiple persons and cultures could embrace together. I felt called to share this story with as many people as possible, but knew that not everyone would take the time to read such a long book.
I had recently been introduced to slam poetry, and thought that if I could condense the book into a shorter poem, I could share it more widely. One afternoon I hiked into the Oakland redwoods with a lawn chair and sat down to compose my first slam poem. The following poem flowed through me and felt like a gift given from the Universe. I have not written another slam poem since. Later, when I was in seminary, a friend wanted to record the poem and use it for an online worship service. This video was created by Unitarian Universalist Rev. Jeremy Nickel, and much of the artwork comes from my best friend and professional artist, Michelle Korte Leccia.”
